Zithromax (azithromycin) is a prescription medication used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria. It works by stopping the growth of the bacteria. It is often prescribed to treat or prevent infections caused by certain types of bacteria. The recommended dosage of Zithromax in adults is one 250 mg tablet taken once daily for seven days, usually in the form of a yellow, brown, or red film-coated tablet. The dosage may be adjusted based on the bacteria causing the infection and the patient's response to treatment. The dosage may be increased by one or two 500 mg tablets taken twice daily for seven days, depending on the severity of the infection. It is important to complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve before the bacteria are completely eliminated. Zithromax is not recommended for children under 12 years of age, unless directed by a doctor. It is important to discuss any existing medical conditions or medications with a doctor before starting Zithromax. If a child is taking Zithromax, it should be taken as directed by their healthcare provider. Children with kidney or liver disease should not take Zithromax. In some cases, Zithromax may be prescribed for other infections that have not responded to previous treatment, such as pneumonia, sinusitis, bronchitis, and tonsillitis. In these cases, the child should be referred to a specialist. It is important to finish the full course of treatment, even if the child's symptoms improve. The full course of treatment may not be covered by insurance coverage and may require a prescription. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and not to skip doses or stop taking the medication too soon. Patients should be advised to take the medication with food to avoid stomach upset.
